“Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”
Joni Mitchell, Big Yellow Taxi
Communities are critical to the preservation of Atlanta’s Urban Forest. With almost 80% of Atlanta’s trees on residential property, the future protection of the City in the Forest is in our hands, on our land and vital to our communities. Communities must have a strong voice in future planning and protection for our urban forest.
Tree cover in many communities is under attack. As the economy booms, the demand for urban real estate increases. Lots with smaller homes are being targeted for houses with a bigger footprint, often by speculators who don’t live here. Trees are clear-cut and neighborhoods lose property value, aesthetic appeal and the many benefits canopy provides.
Study after study shows that property with trees is more valuable than without. All residential property values increase when trees are present, which means we have a lot to lose.
Help grow community support for tree protection by asking your neighborhood association and NPU (Neighborhood Planning Unit) to sign our petition.
